headshot_2_13-14,_WhitmanHAMBURG, N.Y. – Natalie Whitman scored her 1,000 collegiate point from the foul line late in the game, just as Haley Oakes was putting on a shooting clinic, but the Hilbert College women’s basketball team ran out of time to pull out a victory over the visiting Spartans from D’Youville College tonight. D’Youville (6-4) escaped for the second time this season with a 67-60 win over the Hawks (1-9) in the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference match up.

Natalie Whitman finished with 13 points and 12 rebounds earning her 10th double double this season, while Kylie Reinholz was a rebound shy of a double-double to match her 12 points. Amber Hay added 9 rebounds and 7 assists as Haley Oakes chipped in 9 points.

D’Youville’s Alexis Smith led all scorers with 21 points and 9 rebounds.

Hilbert started the game on a 6-0 run only to be countered by a 7-2 run by D’Youville with the Hawks holding an 8-7 lead by 14:10. Hilbert built a 10-point lead using a 5-point surge from Amber Hay. In the next six minutes of play, the Hawks went cold and the Spartans forced a 21-21 tie before they took their first lead with 3:52 remaining. Both teams traded baskets heading into the break all knotted up at 26-26.

Hilbert held the advantage on the glass by 6, but trailed at the foul line making only 2 of their 7 attempts. Whitman went to the locker room with 6 points in 12 minutes due to foul trouble.

Erin Smith started the second half with a quick four points to give Hilbert a 30-28 lead. And Natalie Whitman’s free throw at 13:50 gave the Hawks their last lead of the night at 38-36. D’Youville went on an 18-5 run over a seven minute period putting the hosts in a hole that turned out to insurmountable. At 6:03 Natalie Whitman made a foul shot to reach the 1,000 point plateau to give the Hawks 45 points. Hilbert closed the game on a 15-9 run with Haley Oakes going 4 for 4 in the game’s last four minutes.

Hilbert made only 7 of the 20 free throws but held their rebounding edge by a 55-50 margin. Despite poor shooting in the first half, both teams were able to muster a respectable 40%FG shooting.

The Hawks return to action this Saturday when they host Franciscan University in another AMCC match at 4pm.

Natalie Whitman brought 232 points from St. Andrews University and proceeded to add more markers over the course of the next season and a half since transferring in January 2012. Natalie averaged 13.5 points per game in the 56 games dressed in blue and white before tonight’s game. She needed 11 points to break 1000.
